• Experiencing the Southern charm of Charleston

    2014-03-27

Known for its colorful buildings, historical pull and cultural activities, Charleston, S.C., is the ideal location for vacationers interested in United States travel. Perfect for all types of tourists, the city offers nightlife for students, sites for American history enthusiasts, amusement parks for the adventurous and museums for art lovers.

    Beautiful, secluded beaches
Charleston offers a wealth of scenic sites within the city's wall, but the outlying shores offer some of the most beautiful sandy respites for travelers. Charleston Beaches listed the numerous lands around the area and how they were best suited for tourists. For example, the Isle of Palms is perfect for family travel as it hosts shops, restaurants and activities for all ages. Folly Beach, meanwhile, is better suited for vacationers who want a taste of local life.

Civil war sites for the history buff
The city of Charleston is ripe with historical sites relating to the Civil War. Travel Channel recommended that visitors to the Southern city visit the Fort Sumter National Monument, the location that marked the beginning of the Civil War. Travelers can see the area where Confederate soldiers were bombarded for several days by naval attack.

But Fort Sumter isn't the only historical site in Charleston. Civil War Traveler listed a number of forts, ships and battle grounds housed within the city. Most areas are located within just a few miles of downtown, so tourists should consider planning an entire day dedicated to exploring the rich American history of Charleston.

    Ghost tours target the adventurous
Since the city boasts such a colorful history, it is known for its haunted houses, churches and graveyards. Adventure travel lovers should consider going on one of the city's famous ghost tours, many of which allow visitors to enter antebellum homes that are allegedly haunted. For those that prefer visiting public sites, Travel Channel listed some of Charleston's most ghost-friendly attractions.

The St. Phillips Graveyard, for example, may have a sign that reads, "The only ghost here is the Holy Ghost," but locals swear by the legends passed down across the ages. One of the site's most famous apparitions, Sue Howard, allegedly haunts pregnant women who enter the grounds. The source also describes the Old Exchange Building, which served as a prison in its past. It once held criminals from the American Revolution - and even hosted the pirate Blackbeard at one point - and serves as a hotbed for ghost activity.
